Practical Gamma-Ray Spectrometry – Smakprov

In gamma-ray spectroscopy, the energy of incident gamma-rays is measured by a detector. By comparing the measured energy to the known energy of gamma-rays produced by radioisotopes, the identity of the emitter can be determined. While a Geiger counter merely determines count rates for radiation, gamma spectroscopy has the ability to determine both the count rate and the energy of the radiation. This turns out to be extremely important as different radioiosotopes emit many gammas of differing energies. A gamma spectrum is created by taking measurements of emitted gamma-rays What is gamma-ray spectroscopy? We study gamma rays emitted from excited nuclei to obtain information about: Transition energies and coincidence relationships Level structure Transition rates Lifetimes, quadrupole moment Angular correlations and linear polarisations Spin, Parity (also magnetic moments).

Most radioactive sources produce gamma rays, which are of various energies and intensities. Gamma-ray (γ-ray) spectroscopy is a quick and nondestructive analytical technique that can be used to identify various radioactive isotopes in a sample. In gamma-ray spectroscopy, the energy of incident gamma-rays is measured by a detector.

(McGraw-Hill Dictionary of Scientific and Technical Terms, 4th ed) The photoelectric absorption interaction is the ideal interaction for gamma-ray spectroscopy. The photoelectron carries away most of the gamma-ray energy and then an X-ray or Auger electron carries away the remaining kinetic energy. Assuming an ideal detector, the sum of these energies will equal the energy of the original gamma-ray.
